Dr. Barrera's interests include intensive management of diabetes, hypertension and lipid disorders.
He is also involved in the management of prediabetic conditions including metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
He has been the principal investigator for numerous clinical trials involving the development of new therapies for diabetes, blood pressure and thyroid cancer. He has lectured extensively to physician colleagues and patient groups in the area of cardiovascular risk management and preventive endocrinology. Prior to joining Mission Internal Medical Group, Dr. Barrera was the Medical Director of the Diabetes Program at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California and a team physician for the Oakland Athletics baseball team.
He was also a physician consultant for the KRON and KTVU/Fox news stations in the San Francisco Bay Area.
