As an experienced nurse practitioner in gastroenterology my practice philosophy is to ensure our patients feel comfortable and confident to share their health concerns and questions. It is important to listen to “our patients’ stories” because this is what makes us all unique and gives us the information to help make the diagnosis and develop a plan of care. By understanding our patients needs are the most important reason why we are here, which is the key factor I would like to convey. We often see urgent and complex problems but understanding we have an exceptional team of gastroenterologists to support our patient’s complex needs is key to our success.
My passion is providing gastrointestinal education to our patients so they are well informed and can share in the decision-making process. Once our patients understand the “why” behind the “what next” reduces anxiety and fear. I especially enjoy providing care and guidance for woman’s gastrointestinal disorders. I have found over the past 20 years of my experience in gastroenterology that I am the first clinician my patient has bravely shared a very embarrassing moment. It a very empowering moment for my patients once she realizes she is one of many who share the same GI concerns.
I am a frequent guest lecturer at University of California in Irvine for NP students. I have written and published in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners, Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management, Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Gastroenterology Nursing and The Nurse Practitioner Journal.
In my leisure time, I enjoy being active outside especially kayaking and hiking. I have a renewed passion for cooking and would one day love to write a cookbook to help others “simplify” their desire to eat nutritionally.
