    Biography
Born and raised on the West Coast, Dr. Amy Shaw received her undergraduate degree in Geology from Humboldt State University in 1981. After working for a natural gas consulting firm and becoming disillusioned with her chosen profession, she decided to pursue her dream of being a doctor. She returned to college and received her medical degree at the University of California at Davis in 1989 and then completed her Internship and Residency in Family Practice at the UCSF-affiliated Community Hospital of Sonoma County (now Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital) in 1992.
Dr. Shaw chose the specialty of Family Medicine because of its holistic approach to medical care emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion as well as its focus on understanding patients in the context of their families and communities.
In her variety of roles as a physician, medical leader, and patient advocate, Dr. Shaw developed a special interest and expertise in osteoporosis and cancer, two diseases that can have lasting negative impacts on quality of life.
Her work in cancer care included developing and overseeing the first in the region and nationally recognized Cancer Survivorship Program to provide supportive care of patients in treatment for cancer and those who continue to experience long-term complications after the completion of cancer therapies. Since 2022, the Providence Cancer Survivorship Program has been overseen by Dr. Jessica Les and Dr. Sara Keck.
Since 2023, Dr. Shaw has devoted her efforts to improving the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in our community including strengthening the important and complementary roles of primary care physicians and osteoporosis specialists in the care of patients at highest risk for fractures. Like so many other healthcare providers, Dr. Shaw has witnessed firsthand the detrimental and life-altering changes that can occur when osteoporosis remains unrecognized or untreated and how a major osteoporotic fracture could quickly turn a fit older person into a frail one. Prevention of these life-altering fractures is her passion.
